Homeless Township Children

  • Day to day activities: Volunteers will help with feeding, educating and playing with the homeless township children.
  • Duration of the project: 2 weeks and longer
  • Cost: From R233 (£17) per day
  • What’s included: Airport pickup and return transfer to Cape Town International Airport, accommodation in a dorm, orientation and BBQ, free tour (See options below), BBQ in local township, welcome pack, donation to the organization, 24hr support.

  • Accommodation: Accommodation in a dorm at a local backpackers. (Note: Accommodation can be upgraded to a private room at an extra ZAR120 per night.)
  • Requirements: Love for children. Volunteers need to stipulate before hand what their skills are so that a program can be custom designed.
  • Minimum Age: 18 years
  • Working Hours: This program is very flexible. Volunteers will have to stipulate how many days a week they would like to work before arriving. This project can be combined with any of the following programs: Teaching at Local Township School Cape Town, Disabled and Underprivileged Adults and Children Home or Kite Surfing Outreach Project.

Overview of the Project

A non-profit organization that goes into the townships, feeding and clothing homeless children. Volunteers will help with feeding, educating and playing with the children and are welcome to run their own education programs in the township. People with skills are welcome to teach those less privileged. This program is very flexible. Volunteers will have to stipulate how many days a week they would like to work and what their skills are before they arrive so a program can be custom designed.

It is recommended that you stay for 4 weeks or longer and combine this with one of the Cape Town Tours, Sport Packages or Adventure & Educational tours.

All payments must be made in Rands. Pounds are for illustrative purposes only and based on R14 / £1.

Accommodation

We offer 4 star accommodation in a safe and easily accessible area. We have a variety of different rooms. We have all the facilities any traveller would need from an internet café to a Jacuzzi to relax those travelling muscles. The backpackers are a five-minute walk from the beach, shopping centres, restaurants, transport terminals and rolling distance from bars and pubs.

  • Internet Facilities:Fast and reliable ADSL internet is permanently available in our Café. Contact home and catch up on your blog. The cost is R8 for half an hour.
  • Jacuzzi: This 9 women, 1 man Jacuzzi is ideal to relax those muscles after an adventurous day. It is heated at night on request and reaches temperatures of up to 40°C.
  • Laundry:A washing machine and tumble drier is available to use. For a nominal fee or we will do it for you (hooray!).
  • Communal Kitchen:Complementary tea and coffee is always available in the fully equipped kitchen.
  • Lounge & TV Room:A flat screen TV with satellite access and a video machine - what more do you need for those stay-in days?
  • Zen Garden:Grab a book and relax under the palm trees next to the pond.
  • Bonfire Area:Sit around the large bonfire area, swop travel tales and cook your food the traditional South African way: on the Braai.

Food

Meals will be at your own cost and volunteers normally put their resources together and cook as a team, or go out for a drink and meal at one of the local restaurants. The local supermarket stocks a variety of food and there are fully equipped kitchen in the house for cooking. Budget approximately ₤40 per week.

Telecommunication and medical facilities

Internet Facilities:

Fast and reliable ADSL internet is permanently available in the Café. Contact home and catch up on your blog. The cost is R8 for half an hour.

Hospital and doctors only 1km away.

Qualification and Skills

No experience is necessary. If you have no experience you will be instructed by trained professional on how to kite surf. This is all included in the price. The love for the sun, the sea and sports.

Extra money

This depends on your spending habits. South Africa is not an expensive destination. 20 pounds a week would cover more than the basics.

Immunization & Vaccination

This is a malaria free area. Volunteers can have rabies and anti-tetanus injections should they wish. It is best to contact your local physician before you leave your country.
